There are no words to describe the sadness we feel in our hearts. Uncle Dan was warm hearted, funny and had an infectious laugh that always put smiles on our faces. He and Aunt Penny told stories of the past that you couldn't help but laugh at, many times poking fun at themselves. These are the stories that will be shared with future generations and that will keep Uncle Dan in our hearts forever. ❤❤ We love you and will miss you!

Prayers of strength and peace be with Dan’s entire family. A memory that stands out is this family that Dan and Penny have; they are strong and they are there for each other through it all. They have welcomed our little family many years ago. There has been cookie baking, camping, laughter and the best silly sarcasm. Dan was hard to keep up with! I remember laughter. I remember feeling welcomed. I remember coffee chat. Dan loved cooking while camping and as I recall served up some of the best biscuits & gravy and always had enough to share. One particular camping extravaganza when the southern phrase “bless your heart” was being tossed around and then we all just had to keep saying it in our joking sarcastic way. The smiles. The laughs. In our memories always. We have some unforgettable memories with Mr Dan and this family we will never forget. In sincerest sympathy, Dave Julie and Faith Lynn.

I always enjoyed my time with my Dad he’s going to be missed dearly. I want to thank him for being the best father a son could have!! He taught me everything about life and family and work ethic. Everything a man needs to survive. Thanks Dad and I can’t wait to see you soon and sip coffee and crack jokes. Love You!

When I met Dan, my son's father-in-law, I felt, at once, ease and acceptance. A real down to earth man was Dan. Through the years, we got to each other pretty well. We shared grandchildren and boy, he was as proud as I at their accomplishments I especially enjoyed camping with Dan. We were the early risers. He would have the cofree ready and we would begin our days discussing anything and everything. H was also my opponent at the game of Trionimos. At every get together, we would play and he would be the winner most of the time and not gloat about it. Da Penny and I vacationed in Puerto Rico together. We would head out on our sight seeing destinations with Dan driving. It wasn't long when Penny and I would start yelling slow down, you missed the turn, turn here, etc. because he wouldn't follow directions. Needless to say, Penny became our designated driver. Through it all, Dan could always laugh at himself. I will sorely miss him and his most gentle heart. Carol Hall

We will truly miss him! From almost 30 years ago....meeting Dan and Penny at K-Mart til now has been a blessing. We met through a good friend and I got to know you and your family. From there I got to know Missy and our lives began to grow closer. You and your family became my family over the years. So many parties celebrating life's big events and solving the world's problems with you. My family and I will miss you so much "Dad" and "Grandpa Dan". Love....Mike, Christine, Danny & Connor

As I thought about all the things I could write here, it seemed most appropriate to add a few thoughts about how Grandpa Dan made me feel when we were around one another. He made me feel accepted, and valuable, and cared for. I'm pretty sure most felt the same way as they spent time with him. He loved his family and friends, and in one of our last conversations, his thoughts were about making sure his family would be ok. This speaks volumes about the kind of man he was and where he laid his priorities. There's plenty of lessons displayed throughout his life and in his interactions that endeared him to all of us. In short, he will be greatly missed.
On a lighter note, I loved joking with Dan as we camped together, attended family parties, and as Holly mentioned, knocking that "making pottery on a wheel thing" off his bucket list. In particular, I loved joking with him about the fact I'd have to put my hands on his to guid him through the process. We both laughed at this every time we talked about it. So many good memories, I'm looking forward to sharing them all over fine spirits with his friends and family when this current health crisis concludes. In the meantime, Dan is with his maker, in a good place, cancer and pain free, waiting for us now to join him some day. Our loss is Heaven's gain.

The McDermott family is very sorry sad for the loss of Dan. We have great memories of him in Hawaiian shirts and his army hat reclining in a camping chair soaking in the day and letting us girls get on with our shenanigans even if it meant we were putting specially soaked cakes in the fryer that we placed on his site on Memorial Day weekend. From countless events at Michelle’s house to throwing pottery at our home, we enjoyed his gentle nature and and endearing smile. Our children cared for him like a grandfather and Wyatt was especially drawn to him. We admired his integrity, desire to care for his family, and the kindness he always generously shared with us. Much love to all his loved ones; we are thankful for having had him in our lives and know he will be greatly missed.

The world is a sadder place today without Uncle Dan. I don't have a lot of memories from my early childhood, but I do remember visiting Uncle Dan and Aunt Penny at the house on Whipple and sitting in the kitchen. Uncle Dan always liked to make sarcastic comments and crack jokes. I think what I will remember fondly and miss most is his gruff laugh. I can still hear it and that brings a smile to my face.
And, if it weren't for Uncle Dan and Aunt Penny's 25th wedding anniversary, Cailee wouldn't be in this world! Thank you for that! ;)
Love you Uncle Dan!

There are no right words to say how sorry I am Uncle Dan has always been there for me even when my own family wasn't and always believed in me. Just like when he let me use his car an to move and told me nothing could hold me back. He always had a way of making me know he was always there believing in me even when I felt like I had no one he will definitely be missed
Love you Tammy

We have known Dan for almost 25 years. Since day one, Dan has treated all of the members of the Godsey Family like members of his Family. Dan, every time we got a chance to be fortunate enough to spend time with him, has passed on his perspective on things, his unfiltered thoughts, and his great personality. He was always quick witted, funny, and willing to do anything for anyone. He had a great deal of pride for all of his children and grandchildren. We have really enjoyed attending "gatherings" that involved Dan because we knew we would get a great story or some nugget of knowledge that was given in a way that only Dan could provide it. He has shared so many experiences with our family that we could never thank him enough for. Some of those things are lessons in humility, pride, and family. We are going to miss Dan getting PARENTED by his kids on how or where he should eat the sandwich he just made for himself or told to wear a bib because he was going to spill on himself. We are also going to miss the responses he had to being PARENTED. We are so sorry for the loss of Dan, but happy for the opportunity for him to be a part of our life. He will be remembered and missed by all. The Godsey Brothers-Chris, Craig, Charlie, and Timothy

The world has grown more silent without the sound of his voice and laugh in it. He was “that guy” we could count on for a quick response, that quirky grin and that infectious laugh. He never had a filter, you got exactly how he felt, which is rare. We will forever remember “that guy”, our favorite uncle and greatest uncle to our kids. Thanks for sharing him with us. We will love him always!

There are not enough words to describe how wonderful my Dad was. He was always the light in my life. He was my biggest cheerleader. He would make me laugh even when I wanted to cry. He had the kindest heart and people gravitated to his light. He truly was the best father and grandfather that you could have. He has touched the lives of so many, and he will always live in in our hearts and memories.

I am so sorry Penny. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Dan was such a great guy and I am so glad I got to know him. I have so many memories but the one that comes to mind first is when Matt and I joined the family on vacation out west. We both had a wonderful time. He always had a smile on his face and was always easy to talk to and had a lot of stories to tell. I will miss him!
