Obituary of Daniel R. Hills Sr.

Daniel R. Hills Sr., 75, of Midlothian, passed from this life Tuesday, March 31, 2020. Dan is the beloved husband of Penny L. nee Hamer. The couple were united in marriage for fifty-three years and twenty days. He is the devoted father of Dawn (Dave) Winterfeldt, Daniel (Elizabeth) Hills Jr., Michelle (Timothy) Hall and Kristy (the late Robert) Strilko. Dan is the proud grandfather of Amanda and Samantha Hills, Liam, Kyleen and Nolan Hall and Hannah and Shanna Strilko. He is the dear brother of Gloria Boyce and the loving uncle of many nieces and nephews. Dan was a United States Army veteran serving from 1962-1965, with three additional years in the reserves. He was proud to serve his country and humbled when former President John F. Kennedy boarded a ship he was on to thank and shake hands with the servicemen and women for their dedication. Dan was a radioman in the Army and was given the nickname of "Scoop". This carried throughout his life, as he had a true interest in people and their stories. He was a carpenter by trade. Dan owned his own business for many years. He also enjoyed his work at the Chicago Transit Authority for twenty-six years as a carpenter where he made many dear friends. Dan was devoted to his family and friends, enjoying being with them as often as possible. He was a nature lover and liked to camp. Dan also liked to watch TV, especially old movies. Services and burial for Dan will be held privately, with interment taking place at Abraham Lincoln National VA Cemetery in Elwood. Please defer all flowers and charitable donations until the time of the celebration of his life to be held at a later date.
