I used to come up weekends to help Len with his wines at Tabor Hill in the early 1980s. We tried to find method to use his fine varietals so carefully grown, and so wonderful from the tanks to end up the same way in the bottle. He was so kind to me, and while I never asked for a cent in payment, I had a MS in Enology from UC Davis, and loved simply talking to him. He, and his family were more than kind to put me up (and my wife at times) for working in the winery he loved. He often put the cart before the horse in his search for excellence. I tried to help with ideas on production. But no matter what, he invited me to dinner, to stay the night and was a kind, gentle, intelligent and wonderful friend. I tried to be the same to him. As time went on, we lost touch. I am so sorry for that. He was a wonderful gracious man. He loved what he did and I will miss being able to talk with him, or help him with his wines. He put so much energy into all phases of Tabor Hill, that all new he loved his work and the product as well. Talking, telling stories, and relating to people was his forte along with being a pioneering winemaker. I will always remember him for his love of his work and mostly for his kindness. So many invitations I simply could not make. He understood. I will miss him as I loved the man, his family and they actually put up with my weekend attempts to help that often stretched far into the night. Miss you Len. And sorry you are not around to laugh with and talk to about an art you loved as I did. You were a pioneer, and began what is now a nationwide growth in winemaking. People stole your ideas to use as they worked. And that is the highest compliment you could have. My love Len.
Doug Temple.

I met Len during his Tabor Hill days. He was gifted in many ways and always curious; but the trait I remember best was his sense of humor.

I met Len when he lived in Kentcky. He and my sister, Kathy, started the In Town Winery. Len made the best wine I ever had, and he was always the life of the party. I will always remember him saying this: "The best wine is the wine you like." May Len rest in peace, and may his family find comfort in the Lord.

Len certainly did have a love for life, laughter and wine. I had the privilege of working with him for a brief while at In Town Winery in Louisville, KY and seeing him at many family functions over the years he dated my sister Kathy. It was obvious that he was truly a wine master. I loved his wines and his spirit, he really did make the parties more fun. It was sad when he left Kentucky but I had the good fortune to find him while on vacation in Michigan two years ago. My husband and I spent the better part of the day with him at Baroda Founders and really enjoyed our time. I will cherish that day even more now. Len, I will see you again!

Sadly, I just learned of Len's passing. I met him over a decade ago, and instantly felt as though I had known him for a lifetime. His welcoming demeanor, outgoing personality and passion for his craft will never be diminished. Cheers to you, Len....Merlot is food...
