Obituary of Joel K. Canik
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joel K. Canik, of Blue Island, a talented musician and dear friend. Joel left us on December 8, 2024 at the age of 42.
Joel Canik was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 28, 1982 to Eugene and Orrel Canik (née Kauffman). Joel was the beloved brother of Renee Canik and the late Michael Byrnes. He was a very dear friend of Lisa Schneider, Christopher Usatuck, Scott Ducar, Christina Cuevas and many others whom he has entertained over the years. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, bandmates, and everyone who knew him.
Joel was drawn to music from an early age. Over the years, he played guitar in several bands, earning recognition for his passion and talent. Music was a way of life for him, and he found solace in expressing himself through the songs he played. In addition to his music, Joel was a multimedia artist who created art out of seemingly random, sometimes discarded, items; as well as paintings in his unique style. Most recently he found great satisfaction in designing gardens and doing landscaping work. He viewed his outdoor work as artwork and took enjoyment in creating beauty to be appreciated by others. Joel will be remembered for his individuality, his creativity, his concern for others, his irreverent humor, his pyrotechnics and the lasting impression he left on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A visitation will be held on Monday, December 16th from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 13050 Greenwood Avenue, Blue Island. A funeral service will follow on Tuesday, December 17th at 11:00 am, also at Krueger Funeral Home, 13050 Greenwood Avenue, Blue Island. Interment will follow at St. Casimir Cemetery in Chicago. In lieu of flowers donations in Joel’s memory to The Night Ministry or It’s a Pittie Rescue would be appreciated.
