Obituary of Selso J. Martinez, Jr.

Selso J. Martinez, Jr., 90, of Blue Island, passed from this life on Friday, September 13, 2024.

Selso was born on January 25, 1934 in Blue Island to the late Maria and the late Selso Martinez Sr.  He was the beloved husband of the late Leonor nee Evans who passed away January 26, 2021.   They were united in marriage for over fifty years. Selso is the loving father to Rosemarie, Sandy, Raul, and Selso III (Rebecca).  He is the devoted grandfather to John Kiernan and Simone.  Selso was preceded in death by his siblings, Senovio, Consuelo (Leo) Zamora, Gregorio, and Elizabeth (Rito) Evans. 

Selso spent over 25 years working as an inspector for the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad.  He was a devoted Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs fan.  Selso’s favorite memory is meeting Chicago Bears Hall of Famer Defensive Tackle Steve “Mongo” McMichael #76. Some of his fondest Chicago sports memories were experiencing the Chicago Bears win the 1985 Super Bowl and the Chicago Cubs win the 2016 World Series! When he wasn’t following his favorite Chicago teams, Selso could be found reading both the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times newspapers, he loved crime novels and was a fan of James Patterson.  Selso was an avid car owner and especially loved getting out for long drives in his 2000 Dolphin Blue Toyota Camry 4 door. Selso loved to dance, loved onion rings and Beggars Pizza.  He will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitation for Selso will be held Thursday, September 19, 2024 from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 13050 Greenwood Avenue, Blue Island. Chapel prayers will begin Friday, September 20, 2024 at 9:15 am at the Krueger Funeral Home, then to St. Benedict Church/St. Mary Magdalene Parish, 2339 York St., Blue Island for mass at 10:00 am.  Interment will take place at St. Benedict Cemetery in Crestwood.
