Obituary of Dorothy K. Glasby

Tribute & Message From The Family Dorothy Kathryn Joens Glasby, 87, formerly of Chevy Chase, Maryland, passed away Friday, August 1, 2014 at the Lexington Square Senior Living Facility in Elmhurst, IL. Mrs. Glasby was born June 3, 1927 in Blue Island, IL, the daughter of Albert H. and Anna E. Joens. She married Jonathan Perrine Glasby III on June 4, 1961 in Blue Island. He survives her. Mrs. Glasby graduated from B.I. Community High School in 1945. She received a B.S. degree from Elmhurst College in 1950 and a M.A. from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL in 1953. After teaching English and Biology in Hawaii, she attended the University of Illinois and earned a M.L.S. degree from its Library School in 1959. After receiving her degree she was selected as a Library of Congress recruit at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, where she worked for more than 30 years. She also worked for one year in the early 1960s at the Toledo Public Library in Toledo, OH. At the Library of Congress, Mrs. Glasby held various supervisory positions in the Descriptive Cataloging and Serials Division. For more that two decades she was the recognized international authority of serials cataloging and bibliographic control. In 1987 she was awarded the Margaret Mann Citation in Cataloging and Classification at the annual meeting of the American Library Association. In 1990 she received the Library of Congress's Distinguished Service Award for her outstanding contributions in the field of serials cataloging. Mrs. Glasby was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Mildred Joens Meyer and her brother, Alan Irvin Joens. Along with her husband, she is survived by her sister in law, six nieces and nephews and nine grand nieces and nephews."
