Obituary of Frank W. Grebner Jr.

Frank W. Grebner, Jr. age 93, of Hayward, WI and formerly of Blue Island, IL passed away on Monday, October 16, 2017 at Water’s Edge Care Center in Hayward, WI.

Frank William Grebner Jr. was born March 16, 1924 in Chicago, IL the son of Frank and Irene (Saylor) Grebner Sr. Frank was raised in Chicago until the age of ten when his family moved to Blue Island, IL. Frank graduated from Blue Island Community High School in 1942 and started his college education at the University of Illinois. Frank was only at the university for three months before volunteering for the U.S. Navy on December 12, 1942. Frank served over three years in the Navy during World War II and served on the USS Florikan ASR-9 (Auxiliary Submarine Rescue) and the USS Sperry where they trained submarine crews during the war in the Pacific. After his time in the service, Frank returned to the University of Illinois where he graduated in 1951.   Frank began work with Commonwealth Edison Corporation in 1951 as an engineer. On June 20, 1953 Frank was joined in marriage to Cora Voss in Chicago and together they made their home in Blue Island, IL. Frank worked with Commonwealth Edison until his retirement in 1985. In 1987, Frank and Cora moved to Hayward, WI where they had built a summer home in 1974 that they made into their retirement home. Frank was a member of Auxiliary Submarine Rescue Association, Edison American Legion Post #118 in Chicago, University of Illinois Alumni Association, South Park Lodge #662 A.F. &A.M. of Lansing, IL, Ducks Unlimited and First Lutheran Church in Hayward, WI. He was an avid duck hunter, fisherman, canoeman and sailor who loved the great outdoors.

Frank is survived by his children, Peter Grebner of Little Elm, TX, Myra (Eric) Glaza of Orland Park, IL; three grandchildren, Melanie Brennan, Brian Glaza and Peyton Grebner; two great grandchildren; Rowan Brennan, Seamus Brennas and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Cora; and one daughter, Mary Grebner.

A funeral service celebrating Frank’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 19th, at First Lutheran Church in Hayward, WI . Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Thursday at the church.

Visitation for Frank will be held Sunday, October 22, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Krueger Funeral Home, 13050 S. Greenwood Ave., Blue Island.  Frank will be lying in state Monday, from 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am at First Ev. Lutheran Church, Grove and Ann Sts., Blue Island. Interment will take place at First Ev. Church Cemetery, Alsip.
