Marion J. Decker (née Mercede), 93, a lifelong resident of Blue Island, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on June 15, 2026.

Marion was born on January 18, 1933 in Alsip, IL and was the devoted daughter of the late Alma and the late James “Jack” Mercede. She married the love of her life, Roger A. Decker, and together they built a life centered on family, community, and service. Roger preceded her in death in February 2008.

Marion is survived by her beloved sons, Gary, Richard (Elizabeth), and James, who were her pride and joy. Marion's grandchildren, Katie (Wes) Roberts, Roger (Stephanie), Chrissy (Trav) Prout, Billy, and Annie, were the light of her life. She is also the cherished great-grandmother of 12: Adrian, Madison, Evie, Lucia, Marie, Liam, Julia, Stirling, Joe, Catherine, Victoria, and Danny. Marion was the oldest of six and is the loving big sister of Chris (the late Cookie), the late Ted, Ginny (the late Don) Janulus, Linda (Wally) Prankus, and Robin (the late George) Hartigan. She is a dear aunt to many nieces and nephews and a cherished friend to many. 

Family was the center of Marion’s world. Her greatest devotion was to those she loved, especially her youngest son, Jim. Marion was his fiercest advocate, protector, and champion. She helped lead the way in Illinois to ensure that children with special needs could remain in school until the age of 22. She dedicated herself to keeping Jim active, engaged, safe, and surrounded by opportunities, always standing as his armor and unwavering source of support.  Marion also treasured her friendships and believed that life was enriched by the people we share it with. She nurtured lifelong friendships with the same love and dedication that she gave to her family.

Marion’s second great love was her hometown of Blue Island. She was immensely proud to call Blue Island home and spent decades working to make it a better place for all who lived there. A natural leader, Marion believed that if change was needed, you became part of the solution—and more often than not, she was leading the effort.  Throughout her life, Marion served her community in countless ways. She was President of the Blue Island Women’s Evening Club, President of the PTA, founder and president of the Blue Island Untouchables Mothers Club, and founder and coach of the Untouchables cheerleading program, despite being the mother of three boys. She also worked for the Blue Island Forum newspaper, where she combined her talents as both a writer and designer to help tell the stories of her community.

In recognition of her decades of service and dedication, Marion was honored at the April 2026 City Council meeting with a proclamation from the City of Blue Island, thanking her for the lasting impact she made on generations of residents.

Even while serving her family and community, Marion found time for the activities she loved. Tennis brought her great joy and lifelong friendships; she could often be found on the court well into her eighties. Alongside Roger, she helped create a special community at their summer home on Fish Lake. One of Marion’s favorite traditions was hosting her annual Christmas in July celebrations. She delighted in planning every detail from start to finish, ensuring each event was unforgettable. Costumes were required, creativity was encouraged, and laughter was guaranteed. The parties became legendary among family and friends and demonstrated Marion’s vibrant spirit. 

Marion could be found at the center of any gathering, engaged in lively conversation and easily identified by her loud, distinct, and contagious laugh. People were naturally drawn to her energy, and enthusiasm for life. Whether discussing the community, sharing stories, or simply enjoying time with family and friends, the conversations were always lively and entertaining. 

Visitation for Marion will be Tuesday, June 23rd from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Krueger Funeral Home, 13050 Greenwood Avenue, Blue Island.  Chapel prayers will begin Wednesday at 9:15 AM at the funeral home, followed by Holy Mass at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 2339 York Street, Blue Island.  Procession will follow for burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Alsip.
