Earl Nienhuis Obituary
Earl Nienhuis, 91, of Oak Lawn, IL, passed from this life on March 12, 2026.
Earl was the beloved husband of the late Arlene T. Nienhuis (née Mosel), who preceded him in death in 1997. Married for nearly 40 years, Earl and Arlene created a loving home centered on faith, family values, and time spent together. He was born on December 1, 1934, in Oak Park, Illinois, to the late Arthur and the late Vera Nienhuis.
Earl is the loving father of Ellen (Daniel) Hanrahan, Gale, and Mark (Stephanie). He is the cherished grandfather of Mark (Sydney) Hanrahan, Ryan (Alyssa) Hanrahan, Jared, and Tyler. Earl was the fond brother of the late John (Anita), the late Karl H. (Susan), and the late Robert (Joyce). He was also a dear uncle to many nieces and nephews and leaves many other family members and friends who will cherish his memory.
Earl spent most of his childhood in Freeport, Illinois, where he enjoyed playing both football and basketball. Earl went on to graduate from Elmhurst College, where he proudly served as the quarterback of the football team.
After graduating, he joined the United States Army, where he spent two years writing programs for a Univac computer. The machine was enormous—filling an entire room, with another room dedicated to air-conditioning equipment to keep it cool—yet it was far less powerful than the cell phones we carry in our pockets today. Following his military service, Earl built a long and respected career and eventually retired from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he served as an administrator in the Information Technology Department.
Faith was an important part of Earl’s life. He remained actively involved with Christ Memorial United Church of Christ in Blue Island, where he faithfully served as Treasurer for many years. His commitment to community also included nine years of service on the Governing Council of Bethany Hospital in Chicago.
Above all else, Earl loved his family. He took great joy in watching his grandchildren grow into adulthood. Whether spending time with them close to home or traveling with them on family vacations, he treasured the moments they shared together—memories that will live on in their hearts. In his free time, Earl enjoyed golfing and was a dedicated and enthusiastic Sudoku player.
Visitation for Earl will be held Saturday, March 21, 2026 from 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 PM at Christ Memorial United Church of Christ, 2440 York Street, Blue Island. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Evergreen Park.
