We sorrowfully share that our mamá, Elisa Esparza (nee Esparza Castañeda), 91, of Blue Island passed from this life on Monday, March 2, 2026 surrounded by her loving children.

Elisa was born on April 19, 1934 in La Estancia de Animas, Zacatecas, Mexico to her late parents José “Papache” Esparza Guerra and María Castañeda Silva. Elisa created many fond and loving memories alongside her parents and her late siblings Jesús, Josefa Elvira, Otilia, José, Antonio, Amparo, María “Mariquilla” and Juan in their home and in the countryside. Elisa also shared many happy childhood memories with her late family members, Paula and Antonio Castañeda.

Elisa married her soulmate, the late Cándido Esparza Valadez, after a courtship filled with Candido’s small written notes that Elisa hid in the cactuses of her parents’ home.

Elisa and Cándido’s love brought to this world seven children, Lugarda (late Miguel Angel Manrique), Bernardo (Shirley Ray), Susana (Peter Palomo), Judith (late Luciano Tovar), Esteban (Debbie Downey), Cándido Jr. (late Sue Goelz) and Maria Karina (Raúl Rodríguez). Elisa’s heart, strength, kindness, loving eyes, laughter and prayers were dedicated to uplifting her children through their joys and challenges, with God, the Virgen Mary, Holy Saints, and the Roman Catholic church as her guides.

Elisa’s face lit up when she saw every single one of her 19 grandchildren, Miguel Angel, Juliana (Michael), Maria Guadalupe “Lupita” (Juan Pablo), Bernard Joseph “B.J.”, Mirella, Steven, Elizabeth (Antonio), Lizmarie (Niko), Luciano III (Cindi), Kyle (Noemi), Ashley (Cristian), Christian, Alec (Shae), Cody Viviano (Kellie), Elisa (Donald), Luke (Juana), Diego, Emilio, and Penelope Helena “Bibi”. She cared for each of them as if they were her own children, feeding them, watching over them and loving them every day with all her heart. Whether 51 or 91, she always made the same efforts to keep her family happy.

Elisa saw each addition to her family as a blessing and was ready to give the same undying love to her 13 great grandchildren Juan Miguel, Andres (Maetzy), Stephanie, Christian Jr. “C.J.”, Pablo, Oliver, Leo, Santiago, Amelia, Chloe, Antonio Jr., Aleena, and Saúl.

Elisa’s smile, laughter, cooking, patience, forgiveness, humor, prayers and expressive eyes will be sorely missed. Elisa was one of the most genuine people you could ever talk to. She loved all of her family deeply, and if her family loved you, then she loved you too. Throughout her life, she earned the title of second mother from many. She created a home that became a gathering place for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, priests, parishioners, friends and pets.  Her door and heart were always open, her table always full, and all who entered felt cared for and truly at home.

Elisa’s priorities in life were God, praying, loving and protecting all of her family, maintaining a beautiful garden, cooking delicious food, and making sure people were fed. Elisa shared her traditional Mexican dishes, her Coca Cola, and stories of her life in Mexico with all who came in her home. Elisa had many stories to share and was blessed with many people who were willing to listen, just as she was always willing to listen to anything anyone told her. Her favorite times were holidays and family gatherings. Elisa looked for any reason to celebrate and spend time with her family. Through these celebrations, Elisa emphasized the value of family unity and love. Elisa loved to laugh and loved her family more then she could say, she thought about them every day, and we will continue to think about her forever.

Please join us in celebrating Elisa’s life through prayer and remembering your stories about her. Visitation for Elisa will be held on Sunday, March 8th, from 2:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Krueger Funeral Home, 13050 Greenwood Ave, Blue Island. Chapel prayers will begin Monday at 9:00 AM at the funeral home, followed by a procession to St. Benedict Church/St. Mary Magdalene Parish, 2339 York Street, Blue Island, for Holy Mass at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. Casimir Cemetery, Chicago.

Con mucha tristeza, les comunicamos que nuestra mamá, Elisa Esparza Esparza Castañeda, 91, de Blue Island pasó a mejor vida el lunes 2 de marzo del año 2026. Falleció rodeada del cariño de sus hijos.

Elisa nació el 19 de abril del año 1934 en La Estancia de Animas, Zacatecas, México. Sus padres fueron José “Papache” Esparza Guerra y María Castañeda Silva. Elisa compartió muchos momentos especiales con sus padres y sus hermanos y hermanas en casa y en el monte. Sus hermanos y hermanas fueron Jesús, Josefa Elvira, Otilia, José, Antonio, Amparo, María “Mariquilla” y Juan. Elisa también compartió muchos momentos felices de su infancia con sus familiares, Paula y Antonio Castañeda.

Elisa se casó con el amor de su vida, Cándido Esparza Valadez, después de un cortejo donde Cándido le mandaba cartas que Elisa escondía en los nopales de la casa de sus padres.­­­

Del amor entre Elisa and Cándido nacieron siete hijos, Lugarda (Miguel Ángel Manrique), Bernardo (Shirley “Chole” Ray), Susana (Peter Palomo), Judith (Luciano Tovar), Esteban (Debbie Downey), Cándido Jr. (Sue Goelz) y María Karina (Raúl Rodríguez). El amor de Elisa, su fuerza, su bondad, sus ojos amorosos, su risa y sus oraciones siempre estuvieron dedicados a sus hijos para ayudarles a vivir las alegrías y dificultades de la vida de la mejor forma. Sus guías fueron siempre Dios, la virgen María, los santos y la iglesia católica romana.

El rostro de Elisa se iluminaba al ver a cada uno de sus 19 nietos, Miguel Ángel, Juliana (Michael), María Guadalupe “Lupita” (Juan Pablo), Bernard Joseph “B.J.”, Mirella, Steven, Elizabeth (Antonio), Lizmarie (Niko), Luciano II (Cindi), Kyle (Noemi), Ashley (Cristian), Christian, Alec (Shae), Cody Viviano (Kellie), Elisa (Donald), Luke (Juana), Diego, Emilio, y Penélope Helena “Bibi”. Elisa se preocupaba por cada uno de sus nietos como si fueran sus propios hijos, los cuidaba, les daba de comer y les daba todo su amor. Ya sea a los 51 o 91, ella siempre se esforzó para mantener a su familia feliz.

Elisa veía cada nuevo miembro de su familia como una bendición, y estaba lista para regalar ese mismo amor a sus 13 bisnietos, Juan Miguel, Andrés (Maetzy), Stephanie, Christian Jr. “C.J.”, Pablo, Oliver, Leo, Santiago, Amelia, Chloe, Antonio, Aleena, y Saúl.

Extrañaremos su sonrisa, su comida, su paciencia, su capacidad para perdonar, su humor, sus oraciones y sus ojos tan expresivos. Elisa fue una de las personas más genuinas. Amaba profundamente a toda su familia, y si alguien de su familia te quería, ella también te quería. Durante su vida, se ganó el título de segunda madre de muchos por su bondad y amor. Elisa creo un hogar que se convirtió en el sitio donde se juntaban sus hijos, nietos, bisnietos, yernos, nueras, familia política, sobrinos, primos, familiares lejanos, sacerdotes, feligreses, amigos y mascotas. Su puerta siempre estaba abierta, su mesa llena, y todo quien entraba a su casa se sentía bien recibido y como en casa. 

Para Elisa, sus prioridades siempre fueron Dios, rezar, amar y proteger a sus hijos, mantener su hermoso jardín, cocinar comida deliciosa y asegurase que todos tuvieran qué comer. Elisa compartía sus platillos tradicionales de cocina mexicana, su Coca Cola, y las historias de su vida en México con todos los que entraban a su hogar. Elisa tenía muchas historias para compartir y tuvo la dicha de que muchas personas estuvieron dispuestas a escucharla, así como también ella estaba dispuesta a escuchar las historias de los demás. Sus días preferidos eran los días festivos y las fiestas familiares. Elisa buscaba razones para celebrar cualquier cosa y así poder pasar tiempo con su familia. Con estas celebraciones, Elisa enfatizaba el valor de la unión familiar y el amor. Elisa amaba reírse y amaba a su familia con toda su alma, pensaba en ellos cada día, y nosotros continuaremos pensando en ella por siempre.

Por favor, acompáñenos a celebrar la vida de Elisa mediante sus oraciones y recordando sus historias y anécdotas. El funeral de Elisa será el domingo, 8 de Marzo, de las 2:00 PM a las 7:00 PM en Krueger Funeral Home, 13050 Greenwood Ave, Blue Island. Las oraciones en la capilla de la funeraria comenzarán el lunes, 9 de marzo a las 9:00 AM, seguidas por una procesión a la iglesia de San Benedicto/María Magdalena, 2339 York Street, Blue Island, para la Santa Misa que será a las 10:00 AM. Después de la misa, seguirá el entierro en el cementerio de St. Casimir, en Chicago.
