Fred Schumacher, a lifelong resident of Blue Island, Illinois, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025, at the age of 93.
Born on January 1, 1932, Fred built a meaningful life grounded in hard work, creativity and devotion to family, friends, and his career. In 1968, he married Margaret (née Bowers), with whom he shared a special and enduring partnership.
Fred dedicated his career to Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 73, first as a tradesman and later as an instructor at Washburne Trade School, where he taught thousands of students. He was proud to pass on his skills and even co-authored Sheet Metal Machine Processes in 1975, leaving a lasting mark on the profession.
Beyond his work, Fred was a gifted stained glass artist, creating lamps, jewelry boxes, mirrors, and other home accents that reflected his artistry, patience and attention to detail. He also had a passion for golf, traveling with friends and colleagues to courses near and far. He and Margaret especially cherished time spent in Michigan and Wisconsin, where they enjoyed the beauty of nature, seasonal fruit-picking and evenings of live music.
Fred was a devoted stepfather to John LaCasha (and his late wife, Kathleen “Kitty” LaCasha), and a loving grandfather to Kathy Lind (Kevin), Donna Deverick (Dan), Trish Clark (Ryan) and Ann Marie LaCasha. He was blessed with great-grandchildren—Brandon (Joline), Jonathan, Alexis, and Anthony Lind, William and Aubrey Deverick—and a great-great-grandson, Cooper Lind. His presence, wisdom, and humor will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
Fred’s life was defined by dedication, creativity and love. His legacy endures through his family, his students, and the many works of art he created with his hands.
Visitation for Fred will be on Thursday, September 25, 2025 from 8:30 AM until the time of Chapel Prayers at 10:30 AM at the Krueger Funeral Home, 13050 Greenwood Ave, Blue Island. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip.
