Scott Lynch-Giddings

Obituary of Scott Lynch-Giddings

Scott Lynch-Giddings, passed away peacefully at home on January 30, 2025 at the age of sixty-six with his beloved wife Beth and daughter Amy by his side. After being diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2023 and going through chemo, Scott savored every moment of his time.  He was able to spend time doing things he loved with the people he loved most, including spectacular theater, long weekends at the lake, Cirque du Soleil Beatles Love, and an unforgettable trip to the City of Lights, Paris.

Born Scott Giddings to parents Esther and Lyle in South Bend, Indiana, Scott showed a love for the arts and music at an early age mastering the upright bass in orchestra and traveled with the National Youth Orchestra through Europe at the age of 17.

Scott attended Roosevelt University as a National Merit Scholar. He was quickly bitten with the theater bug and completed his studies with a degree in both English Literature and Theater.  His acting talents were recognized, early and often.  Scott brought full performance to every artistic endeavor.

Scott was a brilliant actor and playwright who seemed to always be gathering material, having deep discussions and heartfelt conversations with people he met every day.

Scott made contributions in other professional work including being a paralegal to the other famous Chicago South Sider, Barack Obama.  For the last ten years Scott worked coordinating patient simulation with Midwestern University.  Patient simulation challenged Scott to blend science, medicine and acting.  He enjoyed the training and the opportunity to provide a unique stage for actors to support the training of the next generation of physicians, nurses and pharmacists.

You wouldn’t hear Scott talk much about work, as he had so many other interests and talents. He could give the best recommendations for a book club book, describe the details of a play or movie or discuss philosophy or politics with just about anyone. You never knew where a conversation with Scott would go.

Scott continued his love of music and spent the last few years teaching himself the ukulele.

An avid sailor, Scott was drawn to the open water, embracing the freedom and peace it brought. He took every chance to be on the waters of the Outer Banks, Lake Michigan, and at Amy and Steve’s lake house on West Otter Lake.

A true Renaissance man, Scott never stopped learning and engaging, ever curious.  His real super power was his ability to connect with others, make them laugh and to be fully present in whatever serious or silly circumstances were at hand and to make the other person feel understood and special. Every day of his life, Scott was at the ready with a clever quip, a quote or a joke - including his last words to many of his family and friends.

Scott is survived by his leading lady and wife of 43 years, Beth (née Lynch). He is the loving stepfather of Amy (Steven) Strauss and Nick Settich.

Scott is the cherished grandfather of Madeleine Rodriguez, Carter Strauss, and Maylynn Strauss. He is the dear brother of Cinda (Al) Kosinski and Daniel (Claudia) Giddings. Beloved brother-in-law, of Letty (John), John (Laurie), Dennis (Cindy), Tim (Pegie), Maggie (Mike) and Uncle to Emily (Joe), Matisse, Joe, Sam, Sara, Jackie, Jack (Keri), Tara (Gino), John, Carey (Pat), Jim (Tiffany), T.J. (Cary), Megan (Joel), Michelle (Mike), Pat, and Great-Uncle to many. He was a brilliant light that went out far too soon.

Scott’s legacy will live on through his work, his music, and the many lives he touched with his kindness, creativity, and boundless curiosity. If you would like to contribute in Scott’s memory donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in his honor.
